Earthquake in New York - An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale has shaken a number of U.S. east coast, shaking buildings and office workers panicked and ran into the streets. An earthquake rocked the region on Tuesday, 08.23.2011 afternoon.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered in Virginia, or 135 miles southwest of Washington. The quake was the strongest in Virginia since 1897. The epicenter was in the state of Virginia but can be felt in Washington.
The government has evacuated the building of U.S. Capitol, Pentagon and other federal buildings, the main museum in Washington was closed to keep things that are not desirable.
The quake was also felt to Boston, including the Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, where President Barack Obama on vacation, transportation systems in New York and other cities back in operation after a delay caused by this earthquake.
Two nuclear reactors at the Louisa County, Virginia, are automatically switched off for safety systems. Evacuation is also done at the Pentagon and congressional buildings of Capitol. Although there is no reports of casualties, but several buildings were damaged including the National Cathedral.
