Java Island is known to have active volcanic mountains. One of them is Mount Semeru. After Mount Merapi erupted, now Mount Semeru become the next attention of local government and the people who are living in the area of Mount Semeru.
Mount Semeru is the highest mountain among the mountains on the island of Java. If this volcano erupts like Mount Merapi, the effects are more severe than the eruption of Mount Merapi.
According to Agus Budhiyanto from the Centre of Vulkanolgi, Mitigation and Geological Hazard, Mount Semeru has different characteristics with the Mount Merapi. The material which is in Mount Semeru is greater than Mount Merapi material. Based on the estimation, there are 9 million metric tons of volcanic material deposits on the summit of Mount Semeru.
Today, although the activity of Mount Semeru increased and released lava at 6:10 in the morning, but its status is still wary. The residents still do their activity as usual. Based on recorded data, gusts earthquake occurred 50 times, the earthquake tremors occurred 35 times and 1 time tectonic earthquake at Mount Semeru.
An experts of disaster from 10 November’s Institute of Technology, Amin Widodo said that the people should formed several groups, so if Mount Semeru show symptoms of eruption, they can be more responsive.
I hope Obama's arrival to Indonesia (Read: The Activities Plan of Obama in Indonesia) will not make Mount Semeru “angry”.
