Smaller iPhone – Based on Bloomberg information, Apple is developing a smaller and less-costly version of the iPhone. A new iPhone is predicted one-third smaller than the iPhone that available right now and would be built with components "similar" to those on the iPhone 4, rather than any next-generation processors or displays—thus keeping a lid on pricing
Certainly, the smaller iPhone is no "Nano" version of the iPhone ever materialized—and indeed, the prototype supposedly spied last year by Bloomberg's unnamed source may yet be scuttled. Then again, it could arrive as soon as the middle of this year, the story claims.
This Apple’s plan have shows their seriousness in slowing the rapid growth of phones based on Google's Android software, Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed sources. And as we noted back in January, shipments of Android smartphones totaled 32.9 million in Q4 of 2010, enough to best even Nokia's Symbian, long king of the smartphone market. In other side, Apple shipped 16 million handsets in the same time period – not shabby, but not exactly gangbusters, especially as compared to Android
Apple also is seeking to make the smaller iPhone that compatible with multiple wireless networks, the report said. Google's int'l market share more than tripled to 32.9% in Q4, surpassing Apple's 16% stake, according to Canalys research. Apple edged up 0.7% to 356.85. Google rose 1.3% to 624.50.
“Instead of targeting 25 percent of the global mobile-phone market, Apple would be going after 100 percent,” Charlie Wolf, an analyst at Needham & Co. in New York, told Bloomberg today.
