Punxutawney Phil 2011, the world's most famous groundhog predicted an early spring Wednesday, after Puxatony Phil managed to come out of his home and did not see his shadow (obviously, since there hasn't been any sun in weeks) and so, Spring will be coming early this year.
As we know each year on Groundhog's Day, February 2nd, the town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania holds the special event that attracts media and many people attention from all around the world. This year marked the 125th anniversary of the event.
Including this Wednesday, Phil has seen his shadow for 98 times and hasn't seen it just 16 times since 1887, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle, which responsible with the event..
A handler for this year named Ben Hughes, removes Phil from his hiding place and villagers and visitors look on as the furry critter looks about. It is then proclaimed whether or not he sees his shadow.
The early/late spring prediction often confuses people because if it is a sunny morning, and he does see his shadow, that is supposed to mean six more weeks of winter -- perhaps a counterintuitive finding given the bright conditions.
