The Most Active Volcano in Iceland Erupted - The most active volcanoes in Iceland, Grimsvotn, erupted. Grimsvotn mountain began erupting on Sunday, May 22, 2011. The volcano last erupted in 2004.
Grimsvotn eruption is marked by white smoke that rose high and some times with a small earthquake. The mountain is located in an unpopulated area under Vatnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland.
Fly zones also have been established as far as 220 kilometers. Isavia, the company that operates and develops all airport facilities and air navigation services in Iceland, said the ban zone is the standard procedure in the vicinity of the eruption.
Concerns arise on the impact of Grimsvotn eruption as a result of previous volcanic eruptions in 2010. In that time Eyjafjallajokull volcano caused flight chaos in all Europe areas.
All European countries banned the airline companies to operate the plane and it was recorded as the largest airspace track closing in Europe since World War II.
But some officials in Iceland said the latest eruption of the Grimsvotn volcano that has monitored are unlikely to cause such as Eyjafjallajokull volcano effects, although flight ban has been imposed in the area around the volcano at this time.
Icelandic Meteorological officer who is also a geologist, Hjorleifur Sveinbjornsson told to Reuters that the Grimsvotn has spread a white smoke up into the air and reaches a height of up to 15 km
"This eruption can be indeed as a big eruption, but did not like the eruption of Mount Eyjafjallajokull that occurred last year," said Sveinbjornsson
